L'hôtel Solvay est l'œuvre la plus représentative, la plus intégrale et la mieux conservée de l’architecte Victor Horta, pionnier de l’Art Nouveau en Belgique. Construit entre 1894 et 1900, il suscita aussitôt l'intérêt dans l’Europe entière. La Belgique occupe, grâce à Horta notamment, une place enviée dans l'Art Nouveau. L'hôtel Solvay reste un des grands monuments de cet art, mais la splendeur de cet ensemble est inconnue, quelques photographies exceptées.

Le but du présent livre est d'illustrer cet édifice au moyen d'une documentation de premier ordre: 40 planches en couleur et de grande surface, 22 planches in folio de plans originaux annotés par Horta lui-même et reproduits en fac-similé (phototypie), d'innombrables photographies et croquis: ceux-ci proviennent souvent des archives inconnues de Horta ou ont été élaborés pour mieux illustrer l'application des idées novatrices de l’architecte, notamment sur le chauffage et la circulation de l'air, l'organisation rationnelle et rythmée de l’espace, la diffusion de l'éclairage naturel... Horta professait qu'en architecture tout se tient : dans l'hôtel Solvay, l’architecture intérieure et le mobilier créés par lui sont conservés et font également, dans la présente étude, l’objet d’une illustration détaillée (y compris les esquisses préliminaires).

L’auteur, Mme Yolande Oostens-Wittamer, a défendu cette thèse de doctorat à l'Université catholique de Louvain après quinze ans de recherches. Elle a également rédigé plusieurs catalogues d’exposition concernant l’Art Nouveau en Europe et en Amérique.


The Hôtel Solvay is the most representative, most integral, and best preserved work of architect Victor Horta, the Belgian pioneer in Art Nouveau. Built between 1894 and 1900, it excited immediate interest all over Europe. It is largely due to Horta that Belgium holds a place of distinction in the history of Art Nouveau, and the Hôtel Solvay remains one of the supreme examples of this art. Save for a few photographs, however, the splendor of the house as a whole has remained unknown.

The purpose of the present work is to publish the building fully, with documentation of the highest quality: 40 color plates and 22 folio pages of facsimile reproductions (in collotype) of original plans with Horta’s own notes, as well as numerous other photographs and drawings. Many drawings come from Horta's hitherto unpublished archives. Others have been specially prepared to better show the architect’s novel ideas in action, particularly his innovations in heating and air circulation, the rational and rhythmic organization of space, and the use of natural lighting. It was Horta’s creed that in architecture everything is interdependent. Both the interior architecture of the Hôtel Solvay and the furnishing which he created to fill it have been preserved and are, in this study, objects of equally detailed illustration.

Fifteen years of research by the author, Yolande Oostens-Wittamer, are gathered together in this work, with which she won her doctorate from the University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve). She is also the author of several catalogues for European and American exhibitions of Art Nouveau.
