This history of the 51st Highland Division's operations in the Ardennes in the winter of 1944- 1945 is based on the personal recollections of over sixty veterans.

The accounts bring back the fears, the hardships, the courage of the soldiers and the almost unbearable suffering of that most intense winter - reflecting well the extent to which the experiences are etched into the minds of the fighting-men.

The author has woven a most effective patchwork that makes fascinating reading. To have such an extensive collection of war-time experiences is in itself a treasure, to have them so skillfully moulded into the narrative enhances the value of the book.
