Withdrawal in 2010 of the last of the famous Brussels 7000-type trams shows that the era of the Western European PCC car is drawing gradually to a close after over sixty years. Based originally on imported US-built equipment, the Belgian tramcar-manufacturing industry developed their own distinctive and highly-successful design of which nearly 900 examples served on nine different systems in five countries. This book explores the origins and characteristics of the Belgian PCC project, as well as other PCC-derived cars in Europe, including those built in Italy and Spain. Using original material and photographs this is an important contribution to the study of post-war transport technology in Western Europe as well as an affectionate tribute to a much-loved and respected tramcar family.
