Mare Ryckaert gaat hierop nader in.

With the intention of broadening the scope of the catalogue we have requested a number of fellow art-historians and historians to write articles on individual aspects of Memling's work and world, as well as Memling studies and historiography. In agreement with the publisher it was decided to publish this essentially specialist material in the writer's original language. The result is thirteen essays — a number which, although unintentionally, most certainly signifies a triumph over superstition. The bibliographical abbreviations refer to the catalogue's reading list.

The series is opened by Michael Wolfson's sketch of German painting at the time ofMemling's youth and 'Wanderjahre'. Maximiliaan P.J. Martens paints a portrait of that so significant world of local and international art patrons who commissioned works from Memling. The essay by Reinhard Strohm follows the same lines, but now concentrating on musical practice in Memling's century and on the ritual by which the same patrons surrounded themselves with both visual and musical material. It must not be forgotten that music played an important part in Memling's oeuvre. He was a precise and versatile illustrator of contemporary musical instruments. This is dealt with by Mia Awouters.

We again meet Memling as a recorder of his times in the article by Mireille Madou on costume and fashion and in that by Ferenc Batdri, who discusses the Oriental carpets of Ottoman-Turkish origin meticulously depicted by Memling.

Research into Memling's technique is booming. Although a considerable part of his work still remains to be studied using the available photographic and laboratory methods, it was more than desirable that a (provisional) account be given of scholarship to date. It is in this light that Catheline Perier-D'Ieteren situates Memling within an overall approach to the evolution of fifteenth-century painting techniques. Maryan W. Ainsworth deals with Memling the draughtsman, based on her years of systematic research into the underdrawings using infrared reflectography. An exceptional object in Memling's oeuvre is the Ursula Shrine. Hilde Lobelle-Caluwe analyses the construction and composition of this piece of furniture. Peter Klein's report on the dendrochronological analysis of seventeen Memling panels brings the technical essays to an end.

Among the scarce biographical information on this painter the location of his house in Bruges is one of the most precise. Marc Ryckaert takes a closer look.

The ups and downs in the appreciation of Memling's art after his death and the remarkable story of his revival in the nineteenth century can be read in Lori van Biervliet's essay. Finally, in the light of the legends surrounding Memling, Dominique Marechal examines symbolic interpretations of Fernand Khnopffs renowned drawing of the square named after Memling in Bruges (Memlingplein). This is also the closing picture in the exhibition, as a symbolic end to the history of Memling.
